UNITE HERE Local 8 Endorses Hilary Franz, 36th Union to Back Her Campaign

May 17, 2024

Tacoma, Washington – Today, UNITE HERE Local 8, representing 4,000 hospitality workers in Washington and Oregon, endorsed Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz for Congress. Franz has been endorsed by 36 unions, more than any other non-incumbent congressional candidate in the country.

In the last week alone, Franz has earned more union endorsements than all four of her opponents have earned during the entire course of this race. From the trades to the service sector, workers are united behind Hilary Franz because she has stood up for them time and again.

As Commissioner of Public Lands, Franz delivered for UNITE HERE Local 8 workers. When the Edgewater Hotel asked for a break on their lease with the Department of Natural Resources when Covid hit, Franz insisted they also give a break to their workers, and sent them back to the bargaining table. The result: hundreds of hotel workers secured a raise and a new contract.

“As a former hotel worker, I am honored to have the support of UNITE HERE Local 8,” Hilary Franz said. “In Congress, I will continue to stand with hospitality workers – from fighting to pass the PRO Act to working to enact comprehensive immigration reform.”

About Hilary Franz

Franz’s roots in the Sixth District run deep – she grew up spending time and working on her grandparents’ farm near the Tacoma Mall, where they first settled in 1938. She lives in Grays Harbor County, raised her three boys in Kitsap County, and has a long history of public service in the district. Prior to serving as Lands Commissioner, Franz served on the Bainbridge Island City Council from 2008-2011, where she secured significant federal investments in transportation infrastructure, developed affordable housing policies, secured protections on critical fish and wildlife habitat, and launched a nationally recognized energy efficiency program.
